The book Plant Anatomy, authored by Richard E. Crang in collaboration with Sheila Lyons-Sobaski and Robert Wise, is a comprehensive and precise resource on the internal structure of seed plants. It is designed to teach both fundamental and advanced principles of plant anatomy to students of plant biology, botany, agriculture, and ecology. Written in scientific yet accessible language, the book explores the cellular and tissue organization in seed plants and presents core concepts related to growth, differentiation, and tissue function through detailed descriptions and illustrative images.<br />The book is organized into six parts comprising nineteen chapters, each addressing different aspects of plant anatomy. It begins by defining the concept of a plant and providing a historical overview of the microscope. The next section focuses on the structure and ultrastructure of plant cells, mitosis and meristems, the cell wall, and the fundamental tissues—parenchyma, collenchyma, and sclerenchyma.<br />Part three offers a thorough exploration of the conducting tissues, namely xylem and phloem. The fourth part consists of five chapters covering the epidermis, root, stem, leaf, and various plant secretory structures. Part five addresses aspects of secondary vegetative growth, including three chapters on vascular cambium, wood, and periderm. Finally, the last section discusses the reproductive structures of plants, divided into three chapters covering the flower and male reproductive organs, female reproductive structures and embryogenesis, and the fruit, seed, and germination.<br />Throughout the chapters, the authors employ precise micrographs, detailed diagrams, and step-by-step explanations to familiarize readers with the anatomical features and functions of each tissue.<br />One of the book’s standout features is its strong emphasis on the correlation between structure and function. It not only describes anatomical features but also investigates their physiological and ecological roles. Additionally, certain chapters examine the anatomical responses of plants under stress, damage, or diverse environmental conditions, making the book a valuable reference for researchers in plant sciences.<br />Overall, Plant Anatomy is a highly valuable and meticulous work that combines classical knowledge with modern findings, providing a solid foundation for a deeper understanding of plant structure. It is suitable not only for undergraduate and graduate students but is also recommended as a reference for teaching and research purposes.
